Apartment Fire in San Francisco Displaces 45 Tenants

Apartment Fire in San Francisco Displaces 45 Tenants

A fire broke out early Friday morning on the top floors of a six-story apartment building in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, forcing 45 residents to leave their homes, according to city fire officials. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) responded shortly after 3 a.m. to the fire at 50 Golden Gate Avenue, where flames on the sixth floor had quickly spread to the attic and roof. Firefighters launched what officials described as an "aggressive attack", preventing the blaze from reaching lower floors and neighboring buildings. During the operation, several residents, along with two cats, were rescued by crews.

More than 100 firefighters, supported by over 50 pieces of equipment as well as police officers and other city agencies, worked together to bring the fire under control. The building’s age and construction materials presented additional challenges during the firefighting efforts, according to the fire department.

The fire was fully contained by 5:30 a.m., but crews were expected to remain at the scene for several hours to investigate the cause and clear debris. In the meantime, displaced residents were temporarily sheltered in a San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency bus. The American Red Cross was also called in to assist those affected.

SFFD shared updates on the incident via social media, stating:
